About Mali

The Republic of Mali is a land locked country located in West Africa. It’s the eighth largest country in Africa with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometers (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 14.5 million. Its capital is Bamako. Mali is bordered by Algeria in north, by Niger in east, by Burkina Faso and cote d’Ivoire in south, by Guinea in south-west, and by Senegal and Mauritania in west. In comparison, the country is about the size of South Africa, or slightly less than twice the size of the U.S. state of Texas.

The Languages in Mali

Mali is a multilingual country. The languages spoken there reflect ancient settlement patterns, migrations, and its long history. French is the official language and Bambara is the most widely spoken. Altogether 13 of the indigenous languages of Mali have the legal status of national language.

The Economy of Mali

The Economy of Mali is based to a large extent on agriculture, with mostly the rural population engaged in subsistence agriculture. The most important cash crop is cotton. Mali is a key cotton producer. Cotton is the top-earning agricultural export, earning the country over 200 million dollars in revenue each year.
Other natural resources in Mali include salt, marble and limestone. But these are extracted in fairly small quantities.
